TANZANIA : Berco Stars register first win in Zone Five tourney

By Brown Msyani
Dar es Salaam. Burundi women’s basketball team, Berco Stars yesterday notched up their first Africa Zone Five win when they hit Ethiopia’s House Agency 58-36 in an exciting match at the National indoor Stadium.
The victory came as a relief for the Burundians who lost 59- 53 and 56-40 to hosts Jeshi Stars and KCC of Uganda in their first two matches. In yesterday's match, Berco Stars took command of the proceedings right from the start. It came as no surprise when they took a deserved 18-9 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, the Burundi team started where they had left off, commanding the game with swift but accuracy passes for a 28-25 half time lead.Earlier, Tanzania’s Vijana (men) succumbed to a painful 83-54 defeat at the hands of Rwanda’s APR at the same venue.
Vijana, once one of the most feared teams in East and Central Africa, were a pale shadow of themselves in yesterday’s game.Vijana, fondly referred to as City Bulls, made a bright start and they seemed destined for a win when they took a 46-12 half time lead.
Surprisingly, the former East and Central champions lost steam towards the end of the nail biting match, allowing their opponents to score points almost at will.
The regional event continues today with Kenya Port Authority (KPA) taking on Berco while Jeshi Stars will have an assignment against Kampala City Council (KCC) of Uganda.
