KENYA : Posta, Wings go top after wins

National women’s basketball league champions Eagle Wings and Posta on Sunday shot at the top of the table standings after registering easy victories in their first leg matches at KCB Sports Club Ruaraka.

Eagle Wings humiliated weak Mennonites 70-32 while Co-op Bank also had an easy run beating Kenya College of Accountancy-University 64-27.

Willy Ochieng had hit 23 points while Desmond Owili added 12 to help Posta beat the Lomboritz 66-46. Posta now lead the 12-team standings with 16 points .

Eagle Wings needed to grab the two points from the hapless Mennonites to dislodge league leaders Yana from the top of the 10-team league standing with with 12 points.

Out-door courts

Wings, who started with a 24-9 first quarter run, remained unbeaten from six outings. Yana, who had no engagement at the Ruaraka out-door courts, dropped to the second position with 11 from five wins and one lose.

Little known Silalei Shani had a brilliant day scoring 14 points for Wings, who flied past their disorganised opponents 37-18 at half-time. Samba Mjomba added 11 points for Wings while Mennonites players Leila Hussein (6 points) and Everline Itabu (9) were restricted not to score in double figures.

Forward Peter Kiganya shot 11 points while Bobby Okwabo hit 10 as Co-op Bank beat KCA-U 64-27. The bankers led 35-20 at half-time. Strathmore University had to battle hard to defeat fellow students Tigers of the USIU-A 65-58 in a tight first leg tie. Strathmore led 33-32 at half-time but had raise their game to win.

Clifton Odhiambo scored 16 points, Paul Nyakinda shot 11 and Emmanuel Odhiambo added 10 for the winners. Victor Bosire who helped Tigers to lead 18-12 in the first quarter, hit 12 and Chris Mulumba replied with 12 for the losers. Flames of the USIU-A harvested two more points when they beat Strathmore University 49-39 in the women’s tie.
