NIGERIA : Customs, Immigration Win as Zenith League Ends

By Pius Ayinor, 07.04.2008

Customs defeated FCT Angels 61-48 yesterday in a day of the uniform ladies as the Nigeria Immigration team also defeated Plateau Rocks 48-41. The wins kept the teams running for the middle of the table where they are clearly gunning for after the first two phases in Abuja and Enugu.
The matches were won as the Zenith Bank League for Women began the final series for this season. The last of the games for the 2007/08 season will be played tomorrow in Lagos at the National Stadium.
Two days before the match played yesterday, Emmanuel Odah of the FCT Angels had told THISDAYSports that they were not bent on winning matches in Lagos.
“We are in a development stage; we are just building a new team. We have never played in the league before and most of the players are just young school leavers and so we don’t expect so much from them now. This is the time to build up experience,” Odah said.
The FCT girls, however, won their first game on Wednesday shocking Dodan Amazons in the process by 53-41.
Also at the National Stadium yesterday Dodan Amazons woke up from a deep slumber to beat AHIP Queens 74-65. It was the third match of the day and the spectators expected the Amazons to win given the records of both teams since the league began four years ago.
The final matches will be played tomorrow at the same venue with AHIP, FCT Angels match starting off the day at 10am. The star treat of Saturday is the last match of the day between winners of last season First Bank and third best team, Delta Force. The game is billed to hold from about 4pm as part of the closing ceremony. Before they step out, Customs will battle the Dolphins.
The closing ceremony is expected to be graced by the officials of Zenith Bank, Sports Ministry and the Federation board members and well as other guests from the Nigerian corporate world.
