RWANDA : B-ball championship set for April 26

The long awaited National Basketball championship is scheduled to unfold on April 26, after being postponed thrice.

The local championship is set to be preceded by today’s technical committee meeting aimed at drawing up this year’s event fixtures.

Three new teams have expressed interest to participate in this year’s championship and they include, School of Finance and Baking (SFB), Ecole Byimana and St.Joseph’s Kabgayi School.

This year’s event will be a challenge for new reigning champions, Marines, to defend the league’s title in the male category, while all time dominants, APR will be defending the female’s title.

The national championship was put on hold for give way to Heroes tournament, Nizeyimana memorial tournament in February, theVeteran tourney in March and the just concluded national mourning week for the 1994 Genocide victims.

Meanwhile, Rwanda Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) president, Fidel Rutagarama, has urged all players and their respective clubs to step up physical training ahead of the event.

"Our players are physically below par compared other regional players,"

"Am urging coaches to try means of improve the players’ physical ability and search for young players too," said Rutagarama.

Rutagarama also recommended the current standards of the national junior team ahead of their participation in the Zone V games set for July.
