ZIMBABWE : Bulawayo Hosts Basketball Event

Basketball enthusiasts are in for a treat this year, as Bulawayo hosts the inter-provincial championships for the first time in eight years.

The tournament kicks off on 28 February at the Bulawayo Club for the Disabled. Bulawayo Province are the defending champions.
Daniel Mombeshora, the Bulawayo Basketball Association vice-chairman (technical department), told Standardsport last week preparations were already in full swing, although they were still battling to secure sponsorship.
"It is good that the tournament is being held in Bulawayo as we last hosted the event eight years ago," Mombeshora said. "Our teams are already preparing for the tournament and the main aim is to retain the title."
Last year the tournament, held in Harare, was sponsored by a South Africa-based company, Mag Petroleum, which is yet to commit itself to this year's event.
A fundraising event has been scheduled for 3 February, where BBA vice-chairman in charge of promotions, Joe Mujuru, would be the host.
Mujuru said at least $12 billion would be needed to host the tournament, adding potential sponsors had made enquiries.
"The problem we have at the moment is that one of the potential sponsors wants to be the only sponsor for the tournament," he said. "But we are still negotiating as we are aiming to have more than one sponsor."
