KENYAN experienced coach Thomas ‘Smatts’ Olumbo returned to Uganda yesterday to lead desperate Mogas Falcons against rampant Uganda Christian University (UCU) Canons in Game Two of the MTN-FUBA League play-offs tonight at Lugogo.

Falcons hired the tactician at the beginning of this season but he has been busy with the Kenyan women’s national team, which he led to the July All Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria. “He is very experienced and we have confidence in him. His presence will definitely make a difference,” Falcons’ influential player Henry Malinga told Daily Monitor yesterday.

Despite losing Game One 49-74, Malinga believes there is hope for the five-time winners. “The morale in our camp is high and the boys are really psyched. We didn’t get the basics right last time but hopefully we keep focused tomorrow (today),” Malinga noted. Canons had an easy ride in the opening clash but coach Jason Mehl concedes that it won’t be easy seeing off Falcons in straight games.

“These are play-offs and anything can happen. The guys are set but as you know, its not easy balancing sports and books. We shall give it our best shot and see what happens,” Mehl stated yesterday.

Inspirational Phillip Odur was left out of Game One and Mehl is uncertain of fielding the giant player today. The Kenyan star has earned plaudits for his stylish slam-dunks. KCC Leopards will count on Miriam Hamala, Annet Nakiwu, Becky Akullo and Linda Tamale as they tackle resilient UCU in the women’s category.
