KENYA : Varsity Sides Finish 3rd in Inter-Cities Championship

The Kenya Universities and Colleges combined basketball team-Varsity Teams finished third overall in both the ladies and men's category in the just concluded 2007 Inter-Cities Championships held in Nairobi , Kenya .

The Ladies Varsity Team defeated Dar es Salaam City 65-44 in the third place play-off. Irene Makori, Sarah Chan and Doreen Minala led the teams' onslaught as they took the first quarter 19-14. Dar City recovered through Lucy Augustino and Eliza Masenyi to tie the second quarter 13-13 for a 32-27 scoreline at the break in Varsity's favour. However, that's as close as they could get as Varsity team, under Coach Tonny Ochieng, recovered on resumption to take the third quarter 11-08, and the final quarter 22-09 to seal the victory. Irene Makori bagged 20 points with Doreen Minala added 10 for the Varsity team, as Lucy Augostino and Eliza Masenyi combined for 15 points.

Varsity Team 88 vs. Mwanza Team (Tanzania) 74

The men's varsity side put up a combined effort to edge out Mwanza Team 88-74 in an entertaining tie. The youthful side, shrugged off Saturdays fatigue they incurred as they battled the Nairobi City Team, to lead the Tanzanian side throughout the game to register the deserved win. Guards Micah Opinya, Allan Ouma and Abel Nson took care of the back-court as dunking-guru Lionel Manyara, Fred Magana and Martin Okwako kept the teams offensive alive in the front court.
