KENYA : Ulinzi win straight fifth league crown

Ulinzi Warriors claimed their fifth successive Premier League crown when they edged Co-operative Bank of Kenya 84-83 in overtime at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

But Kenya Ports Authority’s effort to win a fifth women’s diadem was checked as they succumbed 49-53 to Telkom, hence losing the series 2-1. Ulinzi completed a 2-0 sweep of the bankers.

Ulinzi, who made history by becoming the only Kenyan club to win five titles in a row, had their intentions clear from the start by leading 24-17 and 24-17 in the opening two quarters.

But the last half belonged to Co-op who led 22-12 and 20-16. Both teams were deadlocked 76-76 in normal time. In the extra five minutes, Ulinzi led 8-7.

Ancette Wafula scored game high 29 points while Apollo, a no-factor in game one which Ulinzi won 79-73, contributed 16 points. Peter Kiganya led Co-op with 24 and John Waruru 14.

Four-time title-holders KPA arrived in Nairobi riding on a 1-0 lead. But things became difficult as Telkom hit them 68-57 on Friday to tie the series before going for the kill.

Telkom beat KPA 53-49, though KPA sailed away with 18-12 and 17-14 wins in the first and second quarters. Undeterred, Telkom produce the shock of the year by winning the third quarter 10-3 and the last 19-11 to carry the day.

Joyce Makungu, who scored 23 points in game two, hit another 19 points while Caroline Achieng made 17. KPA had 13 points from Irene Murambi and 12 from Gladys Wanyama.

In other matches, Sprite Storms defeated Yana Milele 54-53 to finish third as Linda Alando scored 10 points. Volnet Wanyama sunk 17 for the losers.

Kisumu Lakeside took the lower division title with a close 68-63 win over Java Warriors while Musa Odari guided KPA men back to the league as he hit 28 points in a 82-47 win over Blazers.
