HOSTING Kampala City Council ladies and men's teams finished second and third respectively in the East and Central Africa Inter City basketball championships that ended yesterday at Lugogo Indoor Stadium. The KCC Leopards, who had eliminated fellow Ugandan side Jinja in the semis, were trailing the Kenyans by 43-28 score at half time.

But Linda Tamale who only played the third quarter made 7 of the 16 points that narrowed the margin. Agatha Baliddawa (23 points) and Becky Akullo (10) then combined in the last quarter that ended 13-09 in favour of Kampala, but the Kenyans held on to the win.

Hilda Luvandwa and eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Angela Luchiuya from Nairobimade 20 and 11 points for the new champions.

The Kampala A side put a devastating 65-64 semi final loss to under dogs Dar es Salaam behind them and revenged on another Tanzanian side Mwanza with a 121-78 victory to snatch third place and a bronze medal.

Ken Balyejjusa, who was surprisingly benched in the semi final loss to Dar, was on fire with 28 points with Steven Omony and Henly Malinga adding 21 and 14 points.

Meanwhile, Jinja finished fourth after their close 47-49 loss to 2005 champions Dar es Salaam. The men's final was still going on by press time yesterday.
