UGANDA: Champs A-1, Marines to open League

THE 2006 MTN Basketball League tips off tomorrow at the YMCA courts. Before action on the courts, the sponsors MTN Uganda and the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) will hold the official opening ceremony.

The two defending champions will be in action to start their campaign as Nkumba University Marines (Men) face arch-rivals Falcons, while the women’s giants A-1 Challenge take on Makerere Sparks.

Falcons have said they now have a stronger team compared to last season. The 2004 league kings have signed new young faces and maintained the old players in order to challenge for top honours.

"We have got new young players and we are not losing any of our old colleagues. We are still very strong and want to get back to the top," Star player Henry Malinga told Daily Monitor yesterday.

The new players include the Sharing trio of Charles Suubi, Sadiq Mugisha and Jackson Kikonyogo. Others are; George Kiyinji, Brian Ssentongo, Gad Eteu and Warriors' Justus Mugisha.

Left handed Luis Habineza, Obed Walker and Walter Alenyo were reportedly falling out with the club, but were blocked from joining other teams. Senior players Sam Obol and Andrew Tendo who were contemplating on retiring from active basketball, have also decided to serve the club for another season.
